What Is Remarketing? And, Why It Works

As a small business owner near Denver, you might have some questions about remarketing. What is it? Do I need to do it? And, does it really work? It does—here’s why!

So, What Is Remarketing?

Remarketing is the practice of serving ads to customers that have already visited your website. In a sense, your company can “follow” users around the internet in spaces where they spend a lot of time—like Facebook, Instagram, or other online websites and apps.

How Does Remarketing Work?

Remarketing only works when users allow their browsers to collect cookies. When a user accepts a “cookie agreement”, they give companies permission to remarket to them. Basically, your plumbing, HVAC, or home remodeling company can follow potential customers around the internet and remind them you exist.

Here’s how it works: a user comes to your website for plumbing services and browses around. They bounce off your site and go to Facebook. There, they see an ad for your company in the sidebar. A few hours later, they are scrolling through Instagram on their mobile device. There, they see an ad for plumbing repair from your company again. Because you have cookies installed and the user agrees to be tracked, your cookies will tell the ad platform of your choice when that user visits another site—and your ad will pop up there, too!

Benefits of Choosing to Use Remarketing

Improves top-of-mind awareness.

Remarketing is a great way to improve immediate awareness of your business to customers who already know you exist. Let’s say a customer checks out your site because they need a plumber to fix their guest bathroom. They don’t call right away. A few days pass and they’ve forgotten about you, so they do another Google search or they call a local plumber recommended by a neighbor. In this situation, everything is up to chance. With remarketing, however, you’ll be top of mind. Whether it’s a few hours or a few days later, your ads will show up where they live on the web—i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.—and they’ll have a better chance of remembering you for when it’s time to schedule service.

Improves conversion rate.

Remarketing can also improve the conversion rate. Why? Because remarketing ads target users who don’t convert—which can be nearly 98% of your website visitors—and encourage them to take another look. On the second or third introduction to your brand, users are more likely to make a sale or call to schedule an appointment because they feel familiar.
